Olivetti: The Jewish Italian Brand!

Samuel David Camillo Olivetti (1868-1943)


Founded the: C. Olivetti & C in 1896,

After he made a visit to: Thomas Edison at his headquarters in New Jersey.

Camillo (How people called him), was impressed of how many people was next to Edison, ready to mount or unmount any Electric or Electromagnetic structure that could be a new invention.

He created his company in his hometown Ivrea (The Old Roman City called Eporedia). Creating a new industrial model, where the workers needed to be in a constant learning to upgrade in both formation and work status. He called himself Libertary Socialist! The first production was based in his own typewriter models.

Afterwards, he bought the American Underwood Company. He created iconic models like Model M20 a complete world success with keys in different writing languages.

Olivetti as look for the progression of his workers that translates in a companies continued success, understanding the importance of the workers families or for the young ones to have the possibility to create one; making of Ivrea a constant city in expansion payed by Olivetti.

He built not just apartments, indoor pools, artificial lakes, children parks, but schools, superior institutions and kindergartens. As being a Jew, he needed to resign his position in the company after the racial laws during the Mussolini government. He moved to Biella, and died far of his company in 1943. He’s buried in the little Jewish Cemetery of Biella.
